Summary

A manual of reflections for an increasingly stressful world

Nothing is stronger than a small hope that doesn’t give up。

The Comfort Book is a collection of little islands of hope, a gathering of consolations and stories that give us new ways of seeing ourselves and the world。

Matt Haig’s mix of philosophy, memoir and self-reflection builds on the wisdom of philosophers and survivors through the ages, from Marcus Aurelius to Nellie Bly, from Emily Dickinson to James Baldwin。

This is the book to pick up when you need the wisdom of a friend or the comfort of a hug, or just want to celebrate the messy miracle of being alive。

This was what it says on the tin 😍 a true comfort, I read this during isolation and it's just what I needed。 Its definitely a book I'd love to go back over and highlight and tab a bit! My personal favourite touch to this book was the less well-known stories of people's journeys through rough times and how it shows the resilience of human kind。 I also love the inclusion of the beauty in the simplicities in life, such as the night sky, pasta, hummus etc。 Glad to find out other people feel as much This was what it says on the tin 😍 a true comfort, I read this during isolation and it's just what I needed。 Its definitely a book I'd love to go back over and highlight and tab a bit! I’ll preface this by saying I adore Matt Haig。 I’ve read pretty much everything he’s ever written (for adults anyway), and I am always incredibly comforted by his words and stories, including this book。 However, I’m not sure “The Comfort Book” is the best title — perhaps “The Hope Book” would be more fitting。 As someone who has suffered from anxiety and experienced periods of depression, I did indeed find it very comforting but someone who has not had those experiences may find it less so。 But I I’ll preface this by saying I adore Matt Haig。 I’ve read pretty much everything he’s ever written (for adults anyway), and I am always incredibly comforted by his words and stories, including this book。 However, I’m not sure “The Comfort Book” is the best title — perhaps “The Hope Book” would be more fitting。 As someone who has suffered from anxiety and experienced periods of depression, I did indeed find it very comforting but someone who has not had those experiences may find it less so。 But I suppose this book wasn’t written for them anyway!TL;DR - Matt Haig is a voice of solace, comfort and hope for anyone who has experience anxiety, depression or despair。 。。。more

This book is exactly what its title suggests, a book that brings immense comfort to the reader。 I felt seen and understood while reading this and, at the same time, I felt like I was talking to a friend who was giving me advice。 I loved the way the author talked about life and mental health。 The writing was also so cozy。 I would highly recommend to anyone who is seeking some solace in their life。

I’ve read three of Matt Haig’s books in the last couple of months (Midnight Library, How to Stop Time, Comfort Book), and I genuinely believe that I’m a slightly better and more empathetic person because of them。 His struggles with depression and near-end of his own life are embedded in the fabric of each of these books。 “The Comfort Book” is a collection of his own musings with a sprinkle of proverbs/stories from other prominent thinkers in history。 He invites you to mark pages as you go and to I’ve read three of Matt Haig’s books in the last couple of months (Midnight Library, How to Stop Time, Comfort Book), and I genuinely believe that I’m a slightly better and more empathetic person because of them。 His struggles with depression and near-end of his own life are embedded in the fabric of each of these books。 “The Comfort Book” is a collection of his own musings with a sprinkle of proverbs/stories from other prominent thinkers in history。 He invites you to mark pages as you go and to use the book as you see fit。 It is full of messages of hope, love, resilience, growth and change。 A common theme is that the unknown is ever-present, but it is important to remember the hope and possibilities this brings。 After climbing out of his own personal hell, Haig knows that the world is full of beautiful things, and they will be there for us when we are ready to look。 I recommend this book for anyone, but especially those that are struggling and need a reminder that they are valued and unique in this world。 After all, “nothing is stronger than a small hope that doesn’t give up。” 。。。more

Nothing earth-shattering in this book。 Just simple, quiet words about life and connections shared by a “friend” (Matt Haig)。 It’s a bit of a refresher course in empathy (for yourself, as well others) post-Covid

Whenever I need my intellectual soul stimulated - I reach for a Matt Haig book。The way he is able to frame concepts resonates。 I hope he never stops writing because I CRAVE more of his books! This book is a fun, fast read。 It just has snippets of thoughts about life。 And it was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be。 A couple of the themes I think I will take away from this book are:- How much more value things have when they become rare ("Imagine if the night sky only existed once in eve Whenever I need my intellectual soul stimulated - I reach for a Matt Haig book。The way he is able to frame concepts resonates。 I hope he never stops writing because I CRAVE more of his books! This book is a fun, fast read。 It just has snippets of thoughts about life。 And it was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be。 A couple of the themes I think I will take away from this book are:- How much more value things have when they become rare ("Imagine if the night sky only existed once in every lifetime")- How important it is to allow yourself to enjoy relaxation ("A dog doesn't feel guilt when it lays in the sun")Some other quotes from this immensely quotable book: Don't think there is a type of face or job or relationship that safeguards happiness。 Happiness occurs when you forget who you are expected to be。 And what you are expected to do。 Happiness is an accident of self-acceptance。 I hope this email finds you beneath a beautiful sky with the wind tenderly caressing your hair like an invisible mother。 I hope this email finds you far away from this email。 When things go dark we can't see what we have。 That doesn't mean we don't have those things。 Those things remain, right there in front of us。 It is always good to know how wonderful so much of life would instantly seem if it was made rare。 Numbers are addictive because they enable us to measure and compare and quantify while also making us feel there could always be more。 Remember: There will be other days。 And other feelings。 The Western idea of self-empowerment requires you to become better。 It says the present is not enough。 It is self-loathing masquerading as salvation。 There comes a beautiful point where you stop trying to escape yourself or improve yourself and just allow yourself。 The sky isn't more beautiful if you have perfect skin。 Music doesn't sound more interesting if you have a six-pack。 Dogs aren't better company if you're famous。 Pizza taste good regardless of your job title。 The best of life exists beyond the things we are encouraged to crave。 。。。more

Some beautiful messages in this book, especially the poems。 I felt it was very like Notes on a Nervous Planet, and I’m definitely more of a fan of Haig’s fiction over non fiction so four stars for this。
